Bruins struggle in season opener, travel to CSU Fullerton tonight
In what is becoming an annual tradition, the UCLA Bruins began their 2012-2013 season visiting the Loyola Marymount Lions. The Bruins did indeed show many of the struggles that commonly occur in a team’s first game. Still developing team chemistry, coaches mixed and matched lines and special teams, and goalies Al Ricciardelli (Sr.) and Rohit Seth (Jr.) split time.
Despite a mere two weeks together as a team, UCLA finished the first period leading 2-1, very much due to the spectacular play by Ricciardelli, who withstood tremendous and constant pressure the entire period. Senior forward Michael Carder scored the first goal of the season for the Bruins, and senior forward Jay Singh put in the second.
However, the incessant pressure from the Lions proved to be too much, as LMU took the lead 7-2 with six goals in the second period and closed out the third and final period by expanding the margin to 11-3. Four Lions posted two-goal games, and junior forward Tanner Collins scored the UCLA’s third goal. Despite the disappointing start to the season, the Bruins enjoyed the production from their new additions and gained a wealth of experience to build on.
After getting its first game under its belt, the team travels to Cal State Fullerton tonight at 8:30 pm. The Titans have begun their season with two losses, one to Long Beach State and the other to San Diego State.
